Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to get my kid into golf, and I finally took the plunge and got him a Young Gun golf set. I figured, you know, start ’em young, right?
First off, I did a bit of digging around before settling on this one. I mean, there’s a ton of choices out there. You got your Callaway, your Cleveland, and a bunch of others. But for a total newbie, I wanted something simple and, let’s be honest, not too pricey. That’s where the Young Gun set caught my eye.
- First Impressions: I unboxed the set with my little guy, and I gotta say, it looked pretty decent. It’s got this 250cc square 3 wood, which, to be frank, I don’t know much about, but it looked cool. Then there are three irons with graphite shafts. They felt pretty light, which I guess is good for a kid just starting out.
Getting Started
So, we hit up the local driving range. Now, I’m no Tiger Woods, but I’ve swung a club a few times. I started by showing my kid the basic grip, how to stand, and all that jazz. Then, we started with the wedge. I read somewhere that it’s a good club for beginners because it’s more “forgiving”. I guess that means it’s easier to hit without messing up too much.
We spent a good hour just practicing with the wedge. My kid was having a blast, even though most of his shots were, well, let’s just say they didn’t go very far. But hey, he was connecting with the ball, and that’s what matters, right?

Progressing Further
After a few sessions with the wedge, I figured it was time to introduce the 7 iron. Another tip I picked up – it’s apparently good for that “intermediate” stage, offering a mix of distance and control. We practiced hitting off the mats, and I could see my kid’s swing starting to improve. He was getting more consistent, and the ball was actually going somewhere!
Now, I know there’s a whole world of golf clubs out there – drivers, 5 woods, putters, and these fancy “super game improvement irons” like the Callaway Paradym or the TaylorMade Stealth. But for now, I’m just focusing on the basics with my kid. We’re having fun, and that’s the main thing.
We’re not aiming for the PGA tour just yet, but who knows, maybe one day. For now, it’s just about enjoying the game, spending time together, and watching my little guy learn and grow. And hey, maybe I’ll even improve my own game along the way. It’s a win-win, right?
