Alright, alright, let’s jaw about them… whatchamacallit… WNBA 2024 trading cards. You know, them shiny little pictures of them basketball ladies. My grandkid, that little whippersnapper, is crazy about ’em. Says they’re gonna be worth a fortune someday. Hmph, I told him, “Boy, you better be studyin’ your books instead of moonin’ over cardboard!” But, you know how kids are these days, deaf as a post when it comes to sense.
Anyways, these here cards, they got all sorts of pictures. Some with the gals smilin’, some with ’em jumpin’ and shootin’. I seen a few, they got them shiny, glittery things on ’em. My grandkid calls ’em “inserts.” Says some are rarer than a hen’s teeth. He’s always jabberin’ about pullin’ a “super rare” or a “signed one.” Signed? Like somebody actually took a pen and scribbled on it? Land sakes, what a waste of good ink!
They call one set somethin’ like “Origins.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Like them gals sprung up from the ground like turnips. This “Origins” set, they say it’s got a bunch of them… “autographs.” That’s just a fancy word for scribbles, mind you. And they got other special cards too, the “inserts” I was tellin’ ya about. My grandkid, he’s got a whole mess of ’em spread out on the kitchen table. Drives his mama crazy, all that clutter. But he says he’s gotta “organize” ’em. Organize? Looks like a pigsty to me.
Now, I don’t know much about these WNBA gals, but I do know a thing or two about money. And from what I gather, some of these here cards, they can fetch a pretty penny. Heard tell of some fella payin’ hundreds, even thousands of dollars for just one little piece of cardboard. Makes my head spin, it does. Back in my day, a nickel could buy you a whole loaf of bread. Now, these young’uns are throwin’ their money away on pictures.

- Regular Cards: Just plain pictures, nothin’ special. Like a picture of your Aunt Millie, but on a card.
- Autograph Cards: These got them scribbles on ’em. Supposedly worth more, but I still say it’s a waste of ink.
- Insert Cards: These are the shiny, glittery ones. Some are rare, some ain’t. It’s all a gamble, if you ask me.
My grandkid, he’s always talkin’ about “grading” his cards. Sendin’ ’em off to some place to get ’em looked at. Then they put ’em in these little plastic cases. Says it makes ’em worth more. Hmph, seems like a racket to me. Just another way for folks to make a buck off these youngsters.
He keeps tellin’ me about some famous players, says their cards are the most valuable. Names like… uh… Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson. Never heard of ’em in my life. But he says they’re the best of the best. Like them old baseball players, Babe Ruth and such. Guess every generation has their heroes, even if they just bounce a ball around.
So, these WNBA 2024 trading cards… they’re a whole different world, I tell ya. A world of shiny cardboard, scribbles, and money. Makes an old woman like me scratch her head. But if it makes them young’uns happy, I guess it can’t be all bad. Just as long as they don’t go spendin’ their whole life savings on ’em. There’s more to life than cardboard, you know. Gotta have a roof over your head and food in your belly before you start worryin’ about collectin’ pictures.
And another thing, my grandkid is always yapping about “boxes” and “packs”. Seems like you don’t just go to the store and buy one card. Oh no, you gotta buy a whole “box” and then you get a bunch of “packs” inside and then you open them up and see what you got. It’s like Christmas, but all year round! He says some boxes are more special than others. Like some have a better chance of getting the good cards. It’s all a big gamble if you ask me. He also talks about “breakers”. Said these fellas open the boxes live on the internet and you buy a “spot” to get the cards from a certain team. I don’t get it. It’s like watching someone else open their presents!
Anyway, I reckon these cards ain’t hurtin’ nobody. And who knows, maybe that grandkid of mine will actually make some money off ’em someday. Probably just end up spendin’ it on more cards though. That’s just the way young folks are these days.
