Well, let me tell ya ’bout this William Roland fella and baseball, you know. I ain’t no fancy writer or nothin’, just gonna tell it like it is.
William Roland, a Baseball Man
So, this William Roland, seems like he was a big deal in baseball, least that’s what folks say. They talk about him bein’ in some kinda “Hall of Famer” thing for the Mill operator Bucs. Don’t rightly know what that is, but sounds important. Like them fellas on TV, you know, the ones with the tight pants and the bats. This William, he was one of them, I reckon.
He weren’t no spring chicken neither, I tell ya. Folks sayin’ he passed on not too long ago, at the start of the year. Sad, real sad. But he left his mark, that’s for sure. Like my old man used to say, “Leave the world better than ya found it.” Guess William did that with his baseball.

Coastal Bend and Baseball Tears
They was real upset down in Coastal Bend when he passed. Said he was a “beloved baseball coach.” See? Told ya he was important. Coached them young’uns, showed ’em how to hit the ball and run the bases. Probably taught ’em some life lessons too, like how to be a good sport and not spit on the ground, though most of them fellas do that anyway.
- He taught ’em good.
- He made ’em strong.
- He loved that baseball.
Reminds me of my grandson, little Timmy. He loves baseball too. Always runnin’ around with his glove and bat, hittin’ rocks and chasin’ squirrels. Maybe one day he’ll be somethin’ like this William Roland. Would make his old grandma proud, that’s for sure.
More Than Just Numbers
Now, they got all these numbers and stats for baseball, you know. Batting this and fielding that. They call ’em “Independent Leagues Statistics.” Don’t mean nothin’ to me, all them numbers. But I guess they’re important to some folks. They got numbers for William Roland too, I bet. Showin’ how good he was at hittin’ and catchin’ and all that. But numbers ain’t everything, I tell ya. It’s the heart that matters, the love of the game. And sounds like William had a whole lotta love for baseball.
Like Them Other Baseball Fellas
This William Roland fella, he reminds me of some other baseball players I heard about. There was this U.L. Washington, played shortstop. They said he always had a toothpick in his mouth. Can ya believe that? A toothpick! And then there was this Javier fella, played second base. Don’t remember his whole name, too long and fancy for me. And that fella who played for 19 years, always in left field. They all loved baseball, just like William. Played it their whole lives, made folks happy watchin’ ’em. That’s what it’s all about, I reckon.
William Roland’s Legacy
So, William Roland, he might be gone, but he ain’t forgotten. Not in Coastal Bend, not by them folks who love baseball. He left a mark, a good one. He taught them young’uns, he played the game with heart, and he made folks proud. And that’s more important than any ol’ number or stat, I tell ya.
It’s the stories, the memories, the feelin’ ya get when ya hear his name. That’s what makes a fella like William Roland special. He was a baseball man, through and through. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
So next time you hear about baseball, remember William Roland. Remember the coach, the player, the man who loved the game. He might not be a household name like them fellas on TV, but he was important. He was a part of baseball, and baseball was a part of him. And that’s all that matters in the end. Baseball, family, and leavin’ the world a little better than ya found it. That’s the kinda life worth livin’, I tell ya.
