Alright, so you’re wonderin’ why them basketball games, the NBA ones, start so darn late, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t always been this way, and it ain’t as simple as you might think. It’s a whole mess of things, like a tangled ball of yarn, ya know?
First off, these games, they ain’t short. They drag on and on, sometimes two and a half hours, sometimes even more than three! Can you believe that? All that runnin’ and jumpin’ and whatnot. And before they even start playin’, they gotta warm up and do all their little rituals. Keeps ’em from gettin’ hurt, they say, and gets their heads in the game. So that takes time, see?
Now, the TV folks, they got a big say in all this. They want the most eyeballs watchin’, and that means puttin’ the games on when folks are home from work and sittin’ down. That’s usually in the evenin’, ’round 7:00 or 8:00, or even later, like 10:00, dependin’ on where you live. East Coast time, they call it. So if you’re out West, well, you’re watchin’ even later. Makes it tough on the young’uns, gotta say.
- Warm-ups and pre-game stuff
- TV wants the best watchin’ times
- Lots of games, gotta spread ’em out
Then there’s the travelin’. These fellas, they ain’t just playin’ in one place. They’re flyin’ all over the country, from one city to another. And that takes time too, ya know? Gotta get from the airport to the hotel, then to the arena, then back again. It’s a whole lotta fuss. And they gotta play a whole bunch of games, like 82 of ’em in a regular season, they say. So they gotta spread ’em out, can’t play ’em all at once, can they?
Some folks, they complain about it. Say it’s too late, kids can’t stay up to watch, and even some grown-ups gotta go to bed. But the TV folks, they got the money, so they kinda get to call the shots. And the players, well, they gotta play when they gotta play. It’s their job, I guess. But it does make ya wonder, don’t it?
I heard tell that back in the day, when there weren’t so many teams, they still played a whole bunch of games, like 82. Don’t ask me why, it’s just what they did. And even now, with all the teams they got, they stick to that number. Maybe it’s just tradition, or maybe it’s somethin’ else. Who knows?
And another thing, these fellas, they get nervous before a game, just like anyone else. So they do all sorts of things to calm down. Some pray, some listen to music, some just sit and think. And some, they go lift weights! Can you imagine? Liftin’ weights before runnin’ around for hours! But they say it helps ’em get rid of the jitters. So that takes time too, I reckon.
So, yeah, there’s a whole bunch of reasons why them NBA games start so late. It ain’t just one thing, it’s a whole mix of things. TV, travelin’, warm-ups, schedules, and even nerves. It’s a complicated world, this basketball business. But at the end of the day, folks still watch, even if it means stayin’ up a little later than they should. They love the game, ya know? And that’s what really matters, I guess.
And it ain’t just the basketball either. I heard tell baseball games start late too, and football. Seems like all the big games are on when folks should be sleepin’. But that’s the way it is, I suppose. We just gotta live with it, or set the recorder, if you still got one of those things.
So next time you’re watchin’ a late game, and you’re yawnin’ and rubbin’ your eyes, just remember all the stuff that goes into makin’ that game happen. It’s more than just a bunch of fellas throwin’ a ball around. It’s a whole big production, with lots of movin’ parts. And that’s why it starts so late. Now, go get yourself a cup of coffee, you’ll need it.
