Well, now, if you’re talkin’ ’bout the best golfer who ain’t never won a major, that’s a big ol’ question. I been watchin’ golf for many years, and lemme tell ya, there’s been plenty of fine golfers who got real close, but never quite got that big win. It’s like one of them chickens that just don’t never lay eggs no matter how many times ya check. But there’s a few names, folks, who stand out more than the rest.
First, let me tell ya about Colin Montgomerie. Now, this feller, he was somethin’ else. Played for years on the European Tour and dominated it like nobody else. But when it come to the big ones, the majors, he just couldn’t seal the deal. Poor guy had some of the worst luck I’ve ever seen. He was right there, so close. I reckon he could’ve won a US Open if it wasn’t for messin’ up on the last hole one year. He never quite got that one big win, even though he was up there in the rankings for years. They say it’s always the ones who get the closest that hurt the most. Colin, bless his heart, was that feller.
Then, there’s Brett Quigley. I tell ya, this man played 407 Tour events, and not a single win. Now, you might think that sounds impossible, but it’s true. He didn’t let that stop him though. The man finished in the top 25 in almost 21% of his events. And five times he was second. But still, no win in a major. I reckon he had a lot of grit, though. It’s like bein’ out in the field, workin’ all day long, but never gettin’ a proper harvest. He just couldn’t get that big ol’ trophy in his hands.
Now, I can’t forget Harry Cooper. This feller won 31 times on the PGA Tour. That’s more than a lotta folks can say, but here’s the thing—he never won a major. Not one. He’s the most successful player who ain’t got a major title, and I reckon that must’ve been a thorn in his side. He’s one of them fellers who showed up week after week, kept workin’, kept playin’, but when it came down to the big stage, he just didn’t get that win. It’s like being the best farmer in the county but never gettin’ a ribbon at the fair. He deserved it, but it never came.
Then there’s Lee Westwood, bless his soul. Another one of them golfers who seemed to be always in the mix. He was there, on the brink, but just couldn’t quite break through. He played in more than a few majors where he came close, and that’s what makes it tough, don’t it? When you see a feller who’s there, hittin’ the ball like he means it, but then somethin’ always falls through. I reckon the pressure is somethin’ fierce. You know, it ain’t always about skill. Sometimes it’s about luck, and Lee just couldn’t catch it.
Now, some folks might talk about the newer guys like Xander Schauffele. I don’t know if he’ll ever get there, but I’m tellin’ ya, he’s got a good swing. He’s been in some tight spots, and I reckon he’ll keep tryin’. He ain’t far from it, but for now, he’s one of them that could’ve, should’ve, but hasn’t quite yet.
But there’s one thing you gotta know about all these fellers. They may not have won the big one, but they sure made their mark. They kept showin’ up, and that’s somethin’ not everyone can say. Some folks just don’t have that persistence. And who knows? Maybe one of ‘em will find that spark and get a win in the future. In golf, it ain’t over till it’s over, and it don’t matter how many times you’ve come in second. You just keep goin’ back out there and swingin’ till you hit that sweet spot.
So, the best golfer who never won a major? Well, there’s no clear answer. Maybe it’s Montgomerie, maybe it’s Quigley, or maybe it’s somebody else who’s just out there waitin’ for their shot. But one thing’s for sure, they’re all some mighty fine golfers, and even without the majors, they’ve earned a place in the history books. And that’s somethin’ that money or fame can’t take away. No sir, not at all.
