Okay, so I saw this idea online for turning a tennis ball into a purse, and I thought, “Why not?” I mean, I’ve got a bunch of old tennis balls lying around from when I used to play. Plus, I love a good DIY project. So, I grabbed a tennis ball, a zipper I found in my sewing kit, and some basic tools.
First off, I had to cut the tennis ball. This was a bit trickier than I expected. I used a sharp knife and carefully made a slit along one side, big enough for the zipper. It wasn’t the cleanest cut, but hey, it worked. After cutting, I cleaned out the inside of the ball. There was a bit of fuzz and rubber bits, but nothing a good shake and a damp cloth couldn’t handle.
Next up was attaching the zipper. This was the real challenge. I decided to hand-sew it because I don’t trust my skills with a sewing machine on a curved surface. I started by pinning the zipper along the cut I made. Then, using a needle and some strong thread, I began sewing.
- I used a simple running stitch, going in and out, trying to keep it as neat as possible.
- Let me tell you, sewing a zipper onto a tennis ball is no easy feat. My fingers got a bit cramped, and I might have poked myself a couple of times.
- But after a good hour or so, and a few breaks, the zipper was on!
It wasn’t perfect, but it was functional. I could open and close the zipper, and it held the two halves of the tennis ball together pretty well.

To make it an actual purse, I needed a strap. I had an old strap from a bag that I wasn’t using anymore. I made two small holes on each side of the tennis ball, near the top, and attached the strap using some metal rings I had lying around. It wasn’t the most elegant solution, but it was sturdy enough.
The finished product was… interesting. It’s definitely a conversation starter. I mean, who wouldn’t do a double-take seeing a purse made out of a tennis ball? I’ve used it a couple of times to carry small things like my keys and some cash. The reactions I get are priceless. Some people think it’s cool, others just look confused, but hey, it’s unique, right?
Final Thoughts
This tennis ball purse project was a fun little experiment. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, and the result is a bit rough around the edges. But it works, and it’s definitely one-of-a-kind. Would I recommend it? Sure, if you’re up for a bit of a challenge and want something truly unique. Plus, it’s a great way to upcycle old tennis balls. I saw someone talk about the Babolat Pure Aero Rafa 12 Pack Bag. Expert reviews, comparisons, and all that. But where’s the fun in just buying a bag when you can make something this quirky?
