Hey everyone, so I’ve been digging into this whole “fastest tennis serve” thing lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride! I mean, who knew people could whack a tennis ball that hard? I decided to see what all the fuss was about and dive into the numbers myself.
First off, I started with the big names. You know, the ones you always hear about in those fancy tournaments. Turns out, this Aussie guy, Sam Groth, smashed the record back in 2012. This dude served a ball at 163.7 mph, or 263.4 km/h! I tried to imagine a ball coming at me that fast, and honestly, I’d probably just duck and cover. He did this at some Challenger event in Busan, South Korea, of all places. Not even one of the major tourneys!
But here’s the kicker, I dug up that his second fastest, and the fastest at a major event was 147 mph at Wimbledon. That is still crazy fast!
- Sam Groth: 163.7 mph (263.4 km/h) – Challenger event
- Sam Groth: 147 mph – Wimbledon
Then there’s this other guy, John Isner. I read that he once hit a serve at 157.0 mph (253.0 km/h) during the Davis Cup in 2016. I mean, these speeds are just insane. I found another one in the first round of this tourney, Janowicz crushed a 251 km/h (156 mph) ball at his opponent.

Women
So, what about the women, you ask? Well, it seems like it’s a bit trickier to get exact numbers for them. I found out that they don’t really track serve speeds as consistently as they do for the men. But from what I could gather, even Serena Williams, one of the greatest, had her fastest serve recorded at around 128.3 mph (206.4 km/h). Still super impressive, but it puts the men’s speeds into perspective, right?
I tried breaking down the numbers, making a little list, and it just blew my mind. It’s like these guys are superhuman or something. And me? I’m just here trying to get the ball over the net in my local park.
Anyway, it was a fun little experiment for me, looking into all these records. Makes you appreciate the skill and power these pros have. Maybe I’ll stick to watching them on TV, though. Serving like that is definitely not in my future!
Let me know what you all think! Have you ever tried to serve a ball that fast? I’d love to hear about it!
