Alright, so today, I wanted to get into some tennis. I’d heard about this guy, Mike Lynn, supposed to be a decent coach or something, and I figured, why not give it a shot? I’m no expert, far from it, but I like to think I can swing a racket.
First thing I did was I tried to find some info on this Mike Lynn guy. Ended up watching a few videos, you know, just to get a feel for what I was getting myself into. He had all these drills and tips, and honestly, it looked kind of complicated at first. But I’m not one to back down from a challenge, so I decided to start simple.
I grabbed my old racket, the one I’ve had since forever, and headed to the local courts. There was no one there, which was perfect. I could embarrass myself in peace. I started with some basic serves. Just trying to get the ball over the net, really. No fancy stuff.
- Serve practice: I tossed the ball up and swung, just like I’d seen in the videos. Most of the time, it went in the wrong direction, but hey, I got a few over.
- Hitting the wall: This is a real workout, I have to say. I just tried to hit the ball against the wall and keep it going. It’s a good way to practice your swing, and man, it gets your heart pumping.
- Trying some drills: Okay, so I did attempt a couple of the drills from the videos. One was about moving your feet and hitting the ball on the run. Let’s just say I need more practice. A lot more.
After a while, I got a little tired. Tennis is hard work! But I felt good. I felt like I was actually doing something, you know? Learning something new, and I decided to practice more and learn more.
So, I went back to those Mike Lynn videos, and I picked out a few more beginner-friendly drills. Rallying with a partner, for example. Now, I just need to find a partner who’s as bad at tennis as I am. Also, practicing serves with targets. I figured I could use some cones or something to aim at.
I went back to the courts a couple more times that week. I tried the target practice with the serves. It was tough, but I started to see some improvement. I even managed to hit a few in the right area. Still haven’t found a partner for rallying, but I’m working on it.
My Takeaway
This whole tennis thing, it’s not as easy as it looks. But it’s definitely fun. And I feel like I’m getting a little better each time. I’m no Mike Lynn, that’s for sure, but I’m having a good time, and that’s what matters, right?
I’m gonna keep at it. Maybe one day I’ll be able to actually play a real game. Until then, I’ll just keep practicing and try not to break my racket.
