Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with baseball stats lately, specifically diving into this guy, Lucas Herbert. Let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. Started off simple enough, just wanted to get a feel for his performance, you know?
First thing I did was just a basic search online. Found some info on a few different sites, nothing too fancy. Some stats here, some career highlights there. Learned that this Herbert guy was a catcher, drafted by the Atlanta Braves back in 2015. Cool, cool.
Next, I started digging into his minor league history. Apparently, he played for a few different teams – the Rome Braves, Florida Fire Frogs, Visalia Rawhide. Yeah, those team names are a trip. Anyway, I found some stats for his batting average, home runs, and RBIs. Looks like he had a career batting average of .224, with 22 home runs and 130 RBIs across 304 games. Not too shabby, but nothing that really jumped out at me, to be honest.
Then, I tried to get a bit more detailed. Wanted to see how he did each year, you know? Found some info about him being released by Visalia Rawhide and then activated by the Reno Aces. This was in 2019, 2020. Seems like he bounced around a bit.

I also stumbled upon some contract stuff. Saw that he was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks at some point. And that he got a pretty hefty signing bonus back when he was drafted – over a million bucks! That must have been a good day for him.
Honestly, the more I looked, the more it felt like just a bunch of numbers. I mean, it’s cool to see his stats and all, but it didn’t really tell me much about him as a player, or what his career was really like. I did find his long track record of catching good pitchers.

Findings
So, yeah, that’s where I’m at with this Lucas Herbert deep dive. It’s been interesting, but also a bit underwhelming. Maybe I need to find some game footage or something to really get a sense of him as a player. Or maybe I’ll just move on to another baseball rabbit hole. Who knows!
