Okay, so, today I wanted to mess around with hitting a tennis ball with a high arc. You know, getting some serious air under it. I grabbed my racket and a bucket of balls and headed to the court, feeling pretty good.
First, I started with some basic warm-up hits. Just getting a feel for the ball, you know? Then I tried to focus on my stance. I remember reading somewhere that your feet make a huge difference, so I tried to keep them shoulder-width apart and really get low, bending my knees like I’m about to pounce.
Next, I started working on my swing. I tried to follow through, bringing the racket up and over my shoulder after I hit the ball. I mean, I’m no pro, but I’ve seen enough tennis to know that’s kind of important. My first few attempts were, well, let’s just say they didn’t go very high. More like dribblers across the court. I could hear some other players chuckling on the next court over, it was a little embarrassing but I pressed on.
I kept at it, trying to adjust my grip and the angle of my racket. I was really focusing on hitting the ball from underneath, trying to lift it up. Slowly but surely, I started to see some improvement. The balls were going higher, getting some decent air time. It felt good to actually see them arc through the air instead of just bouncing pathetically off my racket.

Here’s what I noticed made the biggest difference:
- Getting low: Really bending my knees helped me get under the ball.
- Swing path: Focusing on a low-to-high swing was key.
- Follow-through: Bringing the racket up and over my shoulder helped with the lift.
After a while, I was hitting some pretty good high arcing shots. They weren’t perfect, and I definitely messed up a bunch of times, and there were still times when I felt like I was just trying to smack the cover off the ball. But, I felt like I was getting the hang of it. It’s definitely something I need to keep practicing, but it was a fun experiment. And hey, at least I got a good workout in, running after all those balls!
I even tried to hit the ball from behind the baseline, after reading that you shouldn’t, to see what would happen, and yep, it’s hard. Most of my hits from back there ended up in the net, or sailing out of bounds. I guess that tip was right.
So, that’s my little tennis adventure for today. If you’re trying to get more height on your shots, give these tips a try. Just be prepared to miss a lot at first, and maybe bring some extra balls, because you’ll be chasing them all over the court!
