Well, I’ll tell ya, things ain’t always what they seem, especially in that fancy college world. Heard tell they just up and fired that Auburn women’s tennis coach. Caroline Lilley, that’s her name. Just like that, gone!
Now, I ain’t no tennis expert, mind you. I can barely hit a ball over the clothesline without knockin’ down my prize-winning petunias. But even I can see somethin’ ain’t right here. They say the team was doin’ good, ranked number 14 or somethin’. That sounds pretty darn good to me. Why fire a coach when her team is winnin’? Makes no sense, I tell ya, no sense at all.
Folks are whisperin’ all sorts of things. They say it was a “sudden change of course,” like she done somethin’ real bad. But nobody’s sayin’ what. It’s all hush-hush, you know? Like when old man Johnson’s prize pig went missin’ and folks just winked and said it was “a situation.” Humph, situations, always situations. Why can’t folks just say what they mean?
Heard tell this John Cohen fella, the athletics director, he’s the one who pulled the trigger. Said it was effective immediately. Just like that, she’s out. No farewell party, no nothin’. Makes you wonder, don’t it? Makes you wonder what went on behind closed doors.

Maybe she yelled at the players too much. Maybe she didn’t wear the right color shoes. Maybe she fed them squirrels ‘stead of them fancy energy bars them athletes eat. Who knows? College folks got their own ways of doin’ things, that’s for sure.
- They say she was hired in 2019. That ain’t so long ago, is it? Seems like just yesterday I was watchin’ that Judge Judy on the TV and that fella was talkin’ ‘bout 2019 like it was the end of the world. Hard to believe how time flies.
- And now she’s out. Just like that. Makes you think about job security, you know? One minute you’re teachin’ them girls how to whack a ball, the next minute you’re packin’ your bags.
It’s a doggone shame, I tell ya. These girls, they were doin’ so well. Ranked number 14! That’s somethin’ to be proud of. Now they gotta get used to a whole new coach, learn a whole new way of doin’ things. It ain’t fair to them, it ain’t. It’s like plantin’ a garden, watchin’ it grow all summer, and then havin’ somebody come along and rip it all up just when the tomatoes are gettin’ ripe.
And this Caroline Lilley, I bet she’s hurtin’. Losing your job ain’t no fun, no matter who you are or what you do. Even if you’re one of them fancy college coaches. Maybe she had bills to pay, maybe she had kids to feed. It’s hard out there, real hard. Especially when they pull the rug out from under ya like that.
Some folks are sayin’ it’s all about money, that these college sports are just a big business. Maybe so. Seems like everything’s about money these days. But I still think there’s somethin’ to be said for hard work and dedication. And from what I hear, that Caroline Lilley, she worked hard. She dedicated herself to them girls and that team.
But in the end, it didn’t matter. They fired her anyway. And that, I tell ya, is a real shame. A real doggone shame. It just goes to show ya, you never know what’s gonna happen in this world. One minute you’re on top, the next you’re on the bottom. Just like that.
I just hope them girls find a good coach, somebody who cares about them as people, not just as tennis players. And I hope Caroline Lilley lands on her feet. She deserves better than this, that’s for sure.
Anyways, that’s all I know. Just what I heard from the folks at the diner and that newspaper article my grandson left lyin’ around. It ain’t much, but it’s enough to make you scratch your head and wonder what in the tarnation is goin’ on in that fancy college world.
Maybe we’ll never know the whole story. Maybe it’ll just be another one of them “situations” that folks whisper about. But one thing’s for sure, it ain’t right to fire a coach mid-season when her team is doin’ good. It just ain’t right. Makes me wonder what they’re teaching them kids at that Auburn University, besides how to hit a tennis ball, that is.
