Okay, guys, let’s talk about this NBA 100 sheet project I’ve been messing with. I’m not a stats guy or anything, but I love basketball, and I was just curious, you know?
It all started when I stumbled upon some article ranking the top 100 NBA players. I thought, “Hey, I could do that!” But more like, I wanted to see if I could make my own list, not just copy someone else’s. So, I grabbed a fresh spreadsheet and started jotting down names.
First, I needed some kind of criteria. I wasn’t going to get all fancy with formulas and stuff. I just went with what I felt was important: talent, how well they’ve actually performed, how old they are, and if they’re even playing or injured all the time.
- Talent: Just how good is this guy, really?
- Performance: Not just potential, but what have they actually done on the court?
- Age: The younger, the more potential, but the old guys have experience, so it’s a balance.
- Availability: Can’t rank a guy high if he’s always on the bench with an injury.
I started with the obvious names, the big stars everyone knows, like LeBron and Luka. That was easy. But then it got tricky. I spent hours watching highlights, reading articles, and arguing with myself about where to put everyone else. I even looked up some random facts, like who has the most threes ever. Did you know that is Stephen Curry? Crazy, right?
I also found out about this guy, Jordan Poole, who used to play for Michigan and now plays for the Washington Wizards. See, I’m learning new things! Then there’s this list of the 50 greatest players ever made back in ’96. That was a trip down memory lane.
The hardest part was definitely comparing players from different eras. How do you compare someone from the 90s to someone playing today? The game has changed so much! I tried to be fair, but I’m sure I messed up a few times. I moved players up and down the list like a yo-yo. And let me tell you, I started this around September 10th last year, and with the 2023-24 season ending, I figured it was time to wrap it up.
Anyway, I finally finished it. It’s not perfect, and I’m sure a lot of people will disagree with my rankings. But hey, it was a fun little project, and I actually learned a lot about basketball in the process. Maybe I’ll update it again next season. Who knows!
