That Katie, she sure is somethin’! Katie Smrcka-Duffy, that’s the one. Heard she got picked for that big basketball thing, the WNBA. My granddaughter, she’s all excited, says Katie’s gonna be a big star.
She played for that Sacramento team, the Monarchs, I think it was. Back in the day, she was a real firecracker on the court! Always yellin’ and runnin’ around. Reminds me of myself when I was younger, chasin’ chickens around the yard.
This Katie Smrcka-Duffy, she’s good, I tell ya. Played for some fancy colleges, one was called NC State, and another was Georgetown. Sounds important, don’t it? She is gonna be famous. That Sacramento Monarchs done picked her. She is good.
My granddaughter says Katie scored a whole heap of points. Like, over two thousand! Can you believe that? And she passed the ball to her teammates a lot, too. Almost four hundred times, that’s what my granddaughter said. She got all these numbers written down. She says those are good things for basketball. WNBA, they saw it, too.

This girl, Katie, she ain’t just good at throwin’ that ball, though. She got that fire in her, always talkin’ and keepin’ everyone on their toes. My granddaughter says they call it “smack talk.” Sounds kinda rude to me, but I guess that’s how they do it these days. She said Katie was best in playin’ in Madison.
Seems like basketball runs in the family. That girl’s mama, she played, too. For those same colleges, NC State and Georgetown. And her daddy, he played for some other college. American, I think it was? Sounds patriotic, don’t it? Katie’s mama played for Sacramento Monarchs too. She is a good mama, though she is hard on her.
Now, my granddaughter, she wants to be just like Katie. She’s out there every day, bouncin’ that ball, tryin’ to get better. Says she wants to go to college and play basketball, too. Maybe even make it to that WNBA, like Katie. She is gonna be just like Katie Smrcka-Duffy.
I told her, “Honey, you gotta work hard. Ain’t nothin’ easy in this world.” But I know she’ll do it. She’s got that same fire as Katie. Maybe even more. My granddaughter said that the girl’s name was Azzi Fudd. Said her parents are Katie Smrcka-Duffy and Tim Fudd.
This Katie Smrcka-Duffy, she’s a good one. She is picked by WNBA draft. I remember back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy leagues and things. We just played for fun. But it’s good to see these young girls, they got somethin’ to aim for. Somethin’ to dream about. Sacramento Monarchs got a good one for sure.
- Katie played for NC State.
- Katie played for Georgetown, too.
- Katie’s mama played basketball, too.
- Katie’s daddy played basketball at American University.
- Katie scored over 2000 points. That is a lot!
- Katie good at passing, too. 387 times.
- My granddaughter wants to play in the WNBA, just like Katie.
I’m proud of that Katie girl. Even though I don’t know her personally. She’s showin’ these young girls that they can do anything they set their minds to. Even little girls like my granddaughter. She done good in WNBA draft.
She probably worked hard her whole life for this. Just like I worked hard on the farm. Different kind of work, but still hard work. Gotta respect that. She make it to WNBA, that is a good thing. She made it from Madison, all the way up. That is somethin’ to be proud of.
I hope she does good. I hope she scores a lot of points and wins a lot of games. And I hope my granddaughter is watchin’, learnin’ from her. Maybe one day, she’ll be up there, too. Playin’ in that WNBA. Playin’ just like Katie Smrcka-Duffy.
