That Edgar Alvarez, he sure can swing a bat! I seen him play, Lord have mercy, that boy can hit! Reminds me of my grandson, always playing baseball in the yard. But this Edgar, he’s something else. He’s a professional, you know. Plays for a team called the Cubs, way up in Chicago. Big city, that Chicago. Never been, but I hear it’s noisy.
He’s a big boy, strong. They call him a “first baseman.” I don’t know what all them fancy terms mean, but I know he stands on that first little white bag, and when the ball comes his way, he catches it. Or he hits it. Either way, he’s good at it. This Edgar Alvarez baseball player, he’s good.
I was reading about him. This is about Edgar Alvarez baseball.They say he’s got some kinda “exit velocity”. Don’t ask me what that is. Sounds like something outta one of them space movies. But I reckon it means he hits the ball real hard. I reckon that’s good in baseball. They say he was in “Minor League”, I think it means he plays baseball. He must be good if someone pay him to play.

They got all these numbers about him, too. Stats, they call ’em. Lots of numbers. Too many for this old head to keep track of. But they all say the same thing: Edgar Alvarez, he’s a good baseball player. A real good one. He plays a lot. Seems he just lives at that baseball field. Like when my youngest used to play with his friends in the street. They started playing when the sun is up, they played until the sun goes down. Only difference is Edgar gets paid for playing.
He’s been playing for a long time, that boy. Started when he was young, I reckon. Just like all them boys do. They start young, swinging sticks and throwing balls. Then they get bigger and stronger, and some of ’em, like Edgar, they get real good. They get so good, folks pay ’em to play! Imagine that. Getting paid to play a game! In my day, we played for fun. And chores. Lots of chores.
He’s from somewhere far away, I think. Somewhere warm, I bet. Not like here, where it gets cold in the winter. He must miss home. But he’s here now, playing baseball for the Cubs. And he’s doing good. Real good. This Edgar, he is a very good baseball player. He can play baseball good.
He was with some other teams before, too, I think. Moved around a bit. But now he’s with the Cubs. And they like him. They like him a lot. He is one of their best players. Everyone likes him. He is good at playing baseball.
I don’t know all the rules of baseball. But I know a good player when I see one. And Edgar Alvarez, he’s a good one. He can hit that ball a mile. He can run, he is fast. He runs like a rabbit when he hits the ball. And he can catch, too. They throw it at him like a bullet, and he just snatches it right out of the air. Like magic! He must have played for a long time. This Edgar must have practiced a lot to play so good.

I hope he keeps playing for a long time. He seems to enjoy it. And he’s good at it. Real good. Maybe one day he’ll be in one of them big games they show on TV. The World Series, they call it. That’d be something, wouldn’t it? To see that boy, Edgar, playing in the World Series. He sure deserves it. He works hard. He’s a hard worker, that one. He works very hard. If you want to be good, you have to work hard. He works hard to play baseball, so he plays good baseball.
