Well, let me tell ya ’bout this El Paso soccer tournament, you know, the one them youngsters are all fired up about. It’s a big deal, like, really big, for these kids and their families. They call it the “Cobras Soccer Events Copa de Campeones,” fancy name, huh? Sounds like somethin’ you’d hear on the TV.
This ain’t no small-time thing, no sirree. It’s the TOP, they say, the TOP spring youth sportin’ event in El Paso. Means it’s the best, I reckon. Kids come from all over El Paso to play, and lemme tell ya, they get real competitive. It’s like watchin’ a bunch of little roosters fightin’ over a worm, but with a soccer ball instead.
They been doin’ this for a long time, too. This year, it’s the 17th Annual Cobras Soccer Event. Imagine that, 17 years! That’s a whole lotta soccer, a whole lotta runnin’ around and kickin’. They say it’s “BACK IN THE SUNCITY FOR 2023,” Sun City, that’s El Paso, you know. Always sunny there, hotter than a pepper sprout in July.
I heard tell there’s another one comin’ up too, the 18th Annual Cobras International Cup in October 2024. International, that sounds even fancier! Maybe kids from other places come to play, I don’t rightly know. But it’s gonna be at 201 Isela Rubalcava Boulevard, that’s what they said. You can go sign up now if your young’un wants to play, they said.
This El Paso Soccer thing, they got a Facebook page, I think. Says somethin’ about “8,326 likes.” That’s a whole heap of folks, more than folks in my whole town I betcha! They also talk about “Arena Soccer” and “Indoor Soccer.” Guess they play soccer inside sometimes too, keep them kids outta the sun, maybe.
Them matches, they happen all the time. I saw somethin’ about a match on February 5th, at 9 in the mornin’. Early birds get the worm, I always say. And guess what? If you win, you get to go to somethin’ called the “National Finals” in Phoenix, Arizona. Only the older kids though, the U13 to U19 ones. And it’s always on Fridays at 6:00 pm. That’s a long drive to Phoenix, but I bet them kids are excited as all get-out.

It’s more than just kickin’ a ball though. It teaches them kids about teamwork, about tryin’ hard, and about not givin’ up, even when you’re losin’. And that’s a lesson worth learnin’, no matter how old you are.
