Alright, listen up, y’all. Gonna tell ya ’bout this football coach news, ya know, the stuff they been jabberin’ about on the TV. Heard tell there’s been a whole lotta switchin’ around, coaches gettin’ fired, coaches gettin’ hired, it’s like a dang musical chairs game, but with grown men and footballs.
So, this fella, Dowell Loggains, they say he’s been coachin’ quarterbacks and offenses for a long time, now he’s the head coach for somethin’ called Appalachian State. Don’t rightly know where that is, but sounds fancy enough. Guess he must be a pretty smart fella, knowin’ all them football plays and such. Always gotta have a smart fella leadin’ the team, ain’t that right?
Then there’s this Gus Malzahn fella over at UCF. Don’t know what UCF stands for, some college I reckon. They say he’s one of them “Power 4” coaches. Sounds important, like he’s got a lotta muscle or somethin’. Maybe he yells real loud, that’s how you get power, I figure. Anyways, they’re talkin’ ’bout him, so he must be doin’ somethin’ right, or maybe somethin’ wrong, hard to say with these city folk.
- They call it a “coaching carousel,” like one of them rides at the fair, round and round it goes, coaches flyin’ off, new ones jumpin’ on.
- Athletic Directors, them fellas in suits, they do the firin’, and sometimes the head coaches, they fire their own folks too.
- It’s a whole mess of firin’ and hirin’, leaves a lotta open spots everywhere, like a sieve with too many holes.
Now, this Rice place, they went and hired a fella named Scott Abell. He was coachin’ football at Davidson, another one of them colleges. Seems like everybody’s movin’ around like ants on a hot skillet. Can’t hardly keep up with who’s where no more. Guess that’s why they need us to watch the news, to keep it all straight, though it still sounds like a jumble to me.
Heard tell this kinda thing happens every year, soon as the football season ends. They start cleanin’ house, gettin’ rid of the folks they don’t like, bringin’ in new blood. Maybe they think a new coach will magically make the team win all the games. Don’t know if it works that way, but it keeps them fellas busy, I guess. Seems like a lot of fuss over a game, but folks sure do love their football.
This whole football coachin’ thing, it’s a complicated business. More complicated than plantin’ corn, that’s for sure. You gotta know your plays, gotta know your players, gotta know how to yell real loud to get them fellas movin’. And you gotta win, that’s the most important part. Lose too many games and you’ll be on that carousel, spinnin’ right out the door. Then you gotta find yourself another job, maybe coachin’ little league, or maybe just sellin’ insurance, who knows. It’s a tough world out there, even for football coaches.
This year, it just seems like there’s even more switchin’ and changin’ than usual. Maybe folks are gettin’ restless, wantin’ somethin’ new, somethin’ different. Or maybe they just like firin’ people, some folks get a kick out of that kinda thing, you know. Whatever the reason, it’s been a wild ride watchin’ all these coaches movin’ around like checkers on a board. Makes you wonder if any of them know what they’re doin’, or if they’re just makin’ it up as they go along.
But that’s the way it is with football, I reckon. Always changin’, always somethin’ new happenin’. Keeps things interestin’, I suppose, though I still prefer a good ol’ fashioned barn raisin’ any day. At least then you know what you’re gettin’, good honest work and a strong roof over your head. These football fellas, they’re a different breed, always chasin’ after somethin’, always wantin’ more. Guess that’s the American way, though sometimes it seems like they’re just runnin’ in circles.
So, there you have it, the lowdown on all this football coach news. A whole lotta changin’, a whole lotta firin’ and hirin’, and a whole lotta confusion, at least for this old lady. But hey, that’s what keeps the world spinnin’, right? Change and confusion, that’s the name of the game, whether it’s football or just plain life. And as long as they keep playin’ that game, I’ll keep watchin’, even if I don’t always understand what’s goin’ on.
