Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this album “Sports” by Huey Lewis and the News. It came out way back in 1983, and let me tell ya, it was somethin’ else! This here album is the band’s best-sellin’ one, they say it’s gone 7 times platinum. Now, I don’t know all them fancy words, but that means a whole lotta folks went out and bought it! You got songs like “The Heart of Rock & Roll,” “I Want a New Drug,” and “Heart and Soul”—they all hit the radio and kept people dancin’. If ya ever listen to this record, you can’t help but tap your foot. My grandkids love it too, and they weren’t even born when it came out!
Now, this record here was somethin’ special for the band. It marked a big time in their career. Before this, they had a few hits, but “Sports” really put ‘em on the map. A lotta folks thought this was their best album. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to the 80s when we used to have them backyard cookouts, and folks would throw this album on the ol’ turntable. We’d dance and sing along, not caring if we sounded good or not. Just good ol’ fun!
One thing I gotta mention is how tough things got for the band. I heard that Huey Lewis, the man himself, has been sufferin’ from some hearing loss ‘cause of Meniere’s disease. Ain’t that somethin’? He had to retire from doin’ live shows in 2018. You know, that’s gotta be hard for anyone, but especially for someone who’s been singin’ his heart out all these years. I guess that’s life though, ain’t it? Sometimes it don’t give ya much choice, but Huey Lewis, he’s a trooper, that’s for sure.
And let me tell ya about the band members. I heard one of ‘em, Mario Cipollina, had a rough time with some addiction problems, and they had to let him go in 1995. That’s a sad story, but sometimes people gotta go their separate ways for their own good. But hey, even when things got tough, the band kept goin’, and that’s somethin’ we can all learn from.

If you’re lookin’ to get this album on vinyl, well, I’ve seen it out there for folks still sellin’ it. You might find an original pressin’ or a special edition, like a 40th anniversary version, though I ain’t sure what all that means. I just know it’s still out there, and it’s still as good as it ever was. Whether you’re lookin’ for a keepsake or just love listenin’ to that sweet, upbeat sound, this album’s got somethin’ for everyone.
So, if you ain’t already got a copy of “Sports” on vinyl, maybe it’s time to get one. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just discoverin’ the music, this album still has the power to lift your spirits. It don’t matter if you’re in the kitchen, workin’ the garden, or just sittin’ on the porch—this music will make ya smile. And that’s the truth!
